Fans often have a problem seeing their idols being paired with someone else. Case in point: Some AlDub fans who are salty over Janine Gutierrez being Alden Richards‘ love interest in Victor Magtanggol. They called Janine a “starlet” and even made fun of her birth mark, but the actress didn’t let the comments get to her.
“I’m actually thinking of having a shirt made that says ‘starlet,'” Janine told Inquirer.net. She also shared that growing up in a showbiz family has taught her to have thick skin in situations like this. “I knew what to expect before I entered showbiz, because I practically grew up here. I saw what my parents had to deal with back then… I don’t want to hurt, anger, or disappoint anyone.”
Some netizens are also claiming that Janine is the cause of AlDub’s love team breakup. But if you remember, Maine Mendoza made it clear that she’s not dating Alden Richards and that she wants to do her own thing in the future.
The actual definition of “starlet” is “a young female actor who hopes to be or is thought likely to be famous in the future.” But it also has a bad connotation like referring to someone who uses people to get famous. Here in the Philippines, being a starlet is somehow associated with being an actress who does R-rated scenes.
Whichever definition fans chose to insult Janine with, it’s not okay to undermine someone just because you don’t like them. Fans should be glad that Maine and Alden are doing well in their own projects and broadening their portfolio, and not just confined to a mini-teleserye on a noontime show. Let’s not escalate this by throwing harsh words.
That said, props to Janine for acting professionally throughout this ordeal.
