‘Crazy Rich Asians’ weekend debut only proves what Hollywood was missing

Crazy Rich Asians has already earned the top spot at the US box office—the first romantic comedy to do so in three years—following its weekend debut.

Since its opening five days ago, the film (which cost $30 million), has reportedly made around $34 million to date.

Jeff Goldstein of Warner Brothers said, “This movie is so culturally significant and so unique in that there hasn’t been a cast that’s predominately Asian [in years]. This is one of those few projects that a whole studio comes together with lots of passion.”

It appears the filmmakers made the right decision of turning down a deal with Netflix to risk a cinema release through a Hollywood studio, when the opening weekend in itself made $25 million at the box office.

In second place was the shark thriller The Meg, which earned $21.2 million, followed by the action movie Mile 22 starring Mark Wahlberg, with $13.6 million earnings.
