Meghan Markle has always been outspoken when it comes to social issues, and becoming a royal isn’t going to stop her. For the last part of their first royal tour, she and Prince Harry landed in New Zealand. Here, Meghan gave a speech to celebrate the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage.
First, she spoke of women’s achievements. “The women of New Zealand who campaigned for their right to vote, and were the first in the world to achieve it, are universally admired.” She also brought up the importance of women’s suffrage. “Women’s suffrage is about feminism, but feminism is about fairness. Suffrage is not simply about the right to vote but also about what that represents. The basic and fundamental human right of being able to participate in the choices for your future and that of your community.” In the end, she said a quote by suffragette Kate Sheppard, “All that separates, whether race, class, creed, or sex, is inhuman, and must be overcome.”
We’re happy to see Meghan take her public figure influence to speak on feminism and we can’t wait for other speeches wherein she talks about other social issues.
