An Aussie tabloid claims the new Miss Universe is from Australia, not Philippines

Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray didn’t just make the Philippines proud, even Australia’s celebrating her win. The beauty queen has an Australian-Scottish dad and Filipino mom, both witnessed their daughter’s crowning moment live.

Articles from different Aussie outlets came out with headlines emphasizing that Catriona was born in Cairns and that the new Miss Universe is Australian, but “wasn’t Miss Australia.” They all sound kinda off but The Courier Mail took the cake for cringiest headline when they crossed out “Philippines” and changed it to “Queensland.”

Push ABS-CBN and some netizens spotted the tabloid’s frontpage. One netizen noted that The Courier Mail‘s move is “really below the belt.” We understand the sentiment as well since it comes off as sort of a hijacking of the Philippines’ success in the pageant.

What do you think?
