The egg vs. Kylie Jenner: Why we should stop focusing on likes

The Internet has reached a new level of WTF. In case you missed it, earlier this month, a mysterious egg account popped up on Instagram. The caption in the photo said, “Let’s set a world record together and get the most [likes] on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.” And, true enough, it now has over 37 million likes.

Kylie even responded to this with a joke and the memes have been non-stop since then. Now, I have nothing against fun and games online but I find this situation to be so strange. First, we’re actually talking about an egg (and the person behind it) vs. a human being. I mean, when did society get so confusing? Second, this whole thing started because of likes and popularity. Many have become so obsessed with likes and equate it to self-worth. Remember that Black Mirror episode where they could rate people?

Another piece of evidence that proves this is connected to usernames on IG. If you search world record egg, you will be flooded by the number of accounts that changed their name. Why? Maybe it’s safe to assume that it’s so random people will stumble on their accounts and perhaps give them a follow. Really, go check it out.

For the past few days, people have been so engrossed in this that they probably missed some other things happening around the world that is actually worth talking about. This also brings up the issue of like-obsession. Many run after the likes, hearts, and comments. They live life by these numbers instead of actually enjoying it when creating content.

Let this serve as wake-up call to not take social media, your online life and popularity too seriously. We all just need to take a step back and reevaluate what we’re doing on the Internet.
