Here’s another musical Valentine’s Day gift idea: a playlist. I don’t mean a physical mixtape or CD (although that’d be cool too), you can expect a new Spotify Jams compilation this month called “OPM Love Songs.”
Here, the music streaming service recruited six of the country’s top artists to cover iconic Filipino love songs. Just think: Moira Dela Torre serenading listeners with Rey Valera’s “Naaalala Ka” and Ben & Ben singing an equally soothing version of Jose Mari Chan’s “Beautiful Girl.” Are your hearts already melting from too much emotion? Because ours did when we heard them at the launch yesterday.
You can also expect covers from Sarah Geronimo, IV of Spades, Juan Karlos, and Silent Sanctuary. (Guess which of them performed a Regine Velasquez song.)
According to Chee Meng Tan, Spotify SEA’s head of artists and labels, this Spotify Jams was created to cater to Filipinos’ most searched terms from the last five years: “OPM,” “love,” and “Pinoy.” They’ll also place this under the “Tatak Pinoy” hub on Spotify to unite all OPM songs for local and international consumption.
“OPM has broken barriers for us. It’s putting Filipino songs on the map worldwide,” said Gautam Talwar, Spotify SEA CEO.
The new songs under “OPM Live Jams” will come out in the next few weeks. Just in time for you to add one or all of them to your V-Day playlists. So keep an eye (or ear!) out for them!
