Everyone, including myself, has been excited for the new batch of emojis hitting our smartphones very very soon. Aside from the pinching hand emoji, there is one that we should actually be celebrating. The period drop emoji.
It’s not just software developers we have to thank for this but a campaign started by Plan International UK and NHS Blood Donation. This was started last year and get over 54,000 votes. Plan International UK shared, “It is through your support that we can now celebrate that the Unicode Consortium have announced that we will get our first ever [period emoji] in March 2019.”
In case you’re wondering, this is a big step towards getting rid of the stigma society has on menstruation. Speaking to Time, head of girls’ rights and youth at Plan International UK Lucy Russell said, “The inclusion of an emoji which can express what 800 million women around the world are experiencing every month is a huge step towards normalizing periods and smashing the stigma which surrounds them. For years we’ve obsessively silenced and euphemized periods.”
I honestly can’t wait to use the emoji to express my daily flow in March. Who’s with me?
