Today, in WTF-is-wrong with-the-world: Another media publication treats real people’s real-life issues as “entertainment.”
Maybe you’ve seen it: The headline of Us Weekly‘s latest issue reads, “Two Divorce Bombshells,” referring to singer Adele and actress Michelle Williams. The magazine then claims they have “exclusive details” to why both marriages “failed,” and even included the net worth of both women on the front page.
Under Adele’s photo, they wrote, “She made a career out of breakup songs [and] has now had her heart broken all over again.” Meanwhile, under Michelle’s, they wrote, “First [she] lost Heath Ledger. Now her marriage is over in less than a year.”
Us Weekly, everybody—keepin’ it real classy.
This is a classic example of sensational journalism. Marriages don’t always work out. That’s life. Celebrities aren’t immune to this reality. And to suggest that the women were somehow at fault—well, that’s just unfair. Honestly, we can’t believe this narrative is still happening in 2019. Even netizens are fed up with it.
