A Filipina is co-writing Marvel’s superheroine, Wave

It was announced last March that Marvel will be having their first-ever Filipino heroine debuting in the comic series War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas.

Wave, one of Marvel’s newest superheroes, who was unveiled at the South by Southwest conference (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, is co-created and designed by Leinil Yu, a Filipino comic book artist, and colored by Sunny Gho.

But Yu isn’t the only Filipino who worked on the adventures of Wave. Filipino-American writer, Alyssa Wong will also be part of the comics, adding Aero to the scenes! Aero will team up with Wave, who is Cebuana, and will also possess elemental powers—Wave can manipulate water, while Aero can control air.

“I never got to see Filipino characters when I was growing up, so it’s so, so cool to write Wave now!” Alyssa said in an interview with Marvel Entertainment on July 17.  She adds, “She’s strong because of her water manipulation powers, but she also draws strength from her community and her lolo (grandfather). And that feels emotionally true, to me, for a Filipino superhero.”

Alyssa is an award-winning fiction writer and was tapped by Marvel writer Greg Pak, who said that she is perfect for the job.

He announced on Twitter that Alyssa would be co-writing the Aero series with him, starting with issue #2, which will be out on Aug. 7.

They both expressed how well they work together, and that everything is a collaborative process. Alyssa also explained that she wants the Filipino voice and culture embedded well in the series, and because she was raised in the US, she often consults her Filipino mom—who is also a fiction writer—to tell her more about the Filipino voice.

Alyssa gave us a tiny glimpse of Wave with her lolo.

Go, Filipino pride! We cannot wait for the comics to release.
