Get into the latest skincare craze: bakuchiol

The beauty trend today is all about looking for natural and sustainable alternatives. This time, people are looking at bakuchiol to replace their retinol products.

But wait, what exactly is bakuchiol? Elle explained it’s a chemical compound extracted from bakuchi plant seeds. It has antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, and works like retinol even though they don’t have any structural resemblance. This means that bakuchiol, just like retinol, can boost collagen and elastin production, as well as reduce inflammation.

The real selling point for people is it’s gentler than other retinol products. It’s become so popular that Pinterest searches for the product rose by 275 percent before 2018 ended. Estée Laundry also called bakuchiol “one of the hottest ingredients of 2019.”

If you’ve never experienced any problems with retinol products, there’s no need for you to switch to bakuchiol. But if you’re looking for alternatives, here’s a list of products you can cop.

BYBI Beauty Bakuchiol Booster

This is a face oil made with bakuchiol and olive squalane. It helps the skin produce more collagen to keep the skin healthy. It will also nourish your skin and make it feel soft all day. Available on Sephora PH.

Bioderma Sébium Sensitive

If you have sensitive skin that’s prone to redness, consider using this Bioderma cream. It addresses the causes of skin problems with their SeboRestore technology, which is formulated with Fluidactiv™ patent bakuchiol. This also restores the skin’s hydrating functions, soothes irritated skin, and protects it from future problems. Available at Watsons.

The Inkey List Bakuchiol

The Inkey List’s bakuchiol-infused moisturizer stimulates collagen and improves skin’s elasticity. It’s also formulated with squalane, Omega 3, 6, and 9-rich sacha inchi oil to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier. It’s recommended to use this in the morning and evening after you apply all your serums. Available on Cult Beauty.

Herbivore Botanicals Bakuchiol Retinol Alternative Serum

Many bakuchiol products are marketed to people with dry and sensitive skin. But this Herbivore Botanicals serum is suited for all skin types as it gently exfoliates with PHAs (polyhydroxy acids) and also hydrates your skin. Available online.

Revolution Skincare 1% Bakuchiol Serum

This milky serum is meant to even out skin tone, especially those who’ve gotten hyperpigmentation because of irritants. It also improves skin elasticity and firmness, so feel free to add this to your current nighttime skincare routine. Available on Beauty Bay.

Boscia Matcha Magic Super-Antioxidant Mask

Do you have oily skin? Try Boscia’s matcha mask, which is rich in antioxidants to rejuvenate your skin, and also plant-based extracts like bakuchiol, jojoba seed, and willow bark extract for hydration. Just apply the mask and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes to let it absorb excess oil, leaving you with matte and nourished skin afterwards. Available on Sephora PH.
