Every coffee shop has its story and Mountain Province in East Williamsburg is one for the books. The Filipino-inspired café shop is slowly becoming a staple hangout in Brooklyn, with a shoutout in Gothamist for those who crave for good Filipino coffee and desserts.
Owner Ray Luna shared the story of his grandma this time who put all her children through school by baking pastries. Her recipes live on in Mountain Province from cassava cake to ensaymada, and the gentrified Brooklyn palate loves it. Along with the sweets comes a rich dodge exclusively sourced from the Philippines through Kalsada Coffee. Ray wanted to first open the space for the LGBTQA, a community he was also a part of. His vision was shared by his business partner, fellow immigrants from the Philippines, looking for their own space in a foreign land.
With a steady crowd in it for the novelty and the sheer homeliness of the shop, including palm-patterned wallpaper, old photographs and religious figurines, looks like Mountain Province is going places.
