The state of Virginia just named their new judge: Filipino-American Maha-Rebekah Abejuela.
Abejuela is the first Asian-American woman to take the position in Virginia. According to “The Washington Post,” she’s the daughter of two Filipino immigrants. She’s also a former Fairfax County prosecutor representing the Department of Family Services focusing on abuse and neglect cases of children and incapacitated adults.
She told the outlet that seeing the work of juvenile court judges inspired her to become one. “They were in a position to affect children and families at the most critical parts of their lives. I wanted to be part of that.”
We’d like to congratulate Judge Abejuela for the milestone and we wish her the best of luck in her position.
