People are calling out Bretman Rock for disrespecting our national anthem

Heads up Bretman Rock fans, looks like your favorite YouTube vlogger has violated one of our country’s laws.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NCHP) called out Bretman for dancing to our national anthem, which resurfaced on social media after the video was posted by a netizen on YouTube last September. The video shows Bretman lip-syncing and twerking to “Lupang Hinirang,” which he posted on his Instagram Stories.

Some Filipinos are mad about it.

And some continue to support him.

Yesterday, Jan. 2, the commission gave a public notice: “Dancing to the National Anthem…constitutes a violation of the Flag law,” NHCP Officer-in-Charge Carminda Arevalo said. “When the National Anthem is played…as a sign of respect, all persons shall stand at attention…shall execute a salute by placing their right palms over their chests…[and that] the National Anthem shall not be played or sung for mere recreation, amusement or entertainment purposes.”

If Bretman fails or refuses to observe the act, it may lead to a penalty fine of ₱5,000 to ₱20,000 or imprisonment of not more than one year, reports NCHP.

Uh-oh. We can’t believe this happened. But ignorance of the law excuses no one, right?
