I may be exaggerating, but 2019 was the year of empowering female musicians. You can’t deny it because we got bangers from the likes of Lizzo, who dominated airwaves and was performing in every awards show; Miley Cyrus, who released her sex positive EP “She Is Coming“; Ariana Grande with her successful album “Thank U, Next,” and so much more.
The Recording Academy seems to agree because most of the frontrunners for the 2020 Grammys’ major awards are women. Lizzo has the most nominations with eight, followed by Billie Eilish with six—both are gunning for Best Album, Best Song, Best New Artist, and Best Record. Also nominated this year are Taylor Swift, H.E.R., Lana Del Rey, Camila Cabello, Ariana Grande, Rosalía, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé.
As much as it is exciting to root for your favorite artists, some fandoms can get competitive and ruthless.It’s not a woman vs. woman situation—it shouldn’t be. All of them are talented in their own way, which is why they have chart-topping hits and multiple recognitions.
Let’s talk about some of the ladies predicted to win the Grammys this year and why they deserve to take home an award or two.
Lizzo
Out of all the nominees, Lizzo has the biggest odds to win the most awards this year. It wouldn’t be a surprise since her songs are not only catchy, but also encouraging to so many women. Lizzo’s debut album “Cuz I Love You” was fifth on the Billboard 100, and her songs “Truth Hurts” and “Good As Hell” are certified platinum records. If Lizzo proved anything in 2019, it’s that she’s a positive force in music that won’t go away soon.
Billie Eilish
Eilish may just be 18 years old but she’s already made her mark in today’s pop music. Before her Grammy nominations, she was mostly known for her haunting music videos, one of which included putting a live spider in her mouth. Now, her debut album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” made it to several “Best albums of 2019” lists thanks to its unconventional take on pop.
Taylor Swift
Controversies aside, Swift had a good run with her seventh album “Lover.” It’s well-deserved considering that this is her first album under her newUniversal Music, where she has full ownership of her music unlike when she was still with Big Machine. Even though she only has three nominations this year, it’s still possible for her to win her categories.
Ariana Grande
Variety’s Grammy predictions point to Grande winning Album of the Year for “Thank U, Next.” The album did go platinum since it came out in February 2019 and her fans love the songs in it. We’re guessing music experts could see how much of an impact the album has made in the past year.

Even if these ladies don’t sweep awards, they already proved that they made a lasting legacy in the music industry. That’s more than enough.
