I don’t know if it’s the great visual effects or the interesting plots that compel me to watch K-dramas set in different worlds. Just recently, Netflix announced the upcoming release of “King: Eternal Monarch,” a show set in parallel worlds. While you wait for the premiere this coming April, you can check out similar shows that feature supernatural, fantasy and post-apocalyptic themes:
“My Love From The Star”
After being stranded on Earth for about 400 years, an alien named Do Min-joon develops cynical views on humanity. This changes when he meets actress Chong Song-yi, with whom he eventually falls in love. He finds himself in a dilemma as he tries to suppress his feelings as he is bound to depart the planet in a few months.
“Hotel Del Luna”
“Hotel Del Luna” is about what goes on in the hostel of the same name. Hotel Del Luna primarily caters to ghosts. The hostel’s CEO Jang Man-wol is a beautiful yet suspicious ghost who is stuck in the hostel because of her past. She takes in managerial superstar Gu Chan-sung as the hostel’s manager as part of his father’s deal with the ghost CEO. As he starts working in the hostel, Gu Chan-sung begins to unravel the mysteries inside Hotel Del Luna.
“W: Two Worlds”
Have you ever fallen in love with an anime character? “W: Two Worlds” lets you relive those feelings as it follows the love story between real-life surgeon Oh Yeon-joo and super rich webtoon character Kang-chul, who is saved by the former after he was stabbed by the man who murdered his family.
“Circle: Two Worlds Connected”
Set in a dystopic future, this drama explores the connection between aliens and mysterious deaths. Focusing on two timelines (2017 and 2037), the lead character in each year both attempt to solve the mystery behind these deaths despite the future timeline dividing the Normal Earth (disease and crime-filled) and Smart Earth (Utopian society). If you’ve watched “The Giver,” Smart Earth has the same vibe.
“Bring It On, Ghost”
After dying in a car accident, Kim Hyun-ji roams her high school where she meets exorcist Park Bong-pal, an Economics student who has the ability to see ghosts. As they team up, Bong-pal realizes that his ability to fight ghosts has improved with Hyun-ji around. The two fall in love with each other without realizing that the evil spirit behind Hyun-ji’s death and Bong-pal’s powers is lurking around them to prevent them from performing a ritual that can wipe him out.
