Get whipped over these dalgona coffee alternatives

You’ve heard of dalgona coffee, yes?

If you haven’t, then first of all…that’s actually impressive—I kinda wish I could use that energy to block bad vibes and sad news, too. (Kidding?)

For those of you who are curious, dalgona coffee (KR: 달고나커피) is a drink made by combining equal parts instant coffee powder, sugar and hot water and then whisking them together until a beautiful, creamy emulsion forms. I don’t know the science behind this but I can safely say that this is one case when the whole is much better than the sum of its parts, especially when you (carefully) spoon the mixture over milk and then stir it in.
Ab-so-lutely delicious.

If only it didn’t take ages to whip to the right consistency.

If you don’t have an electric mixer handy or just choose to go full meat hooks with this then you’re likely to get a decent workout in. Of course, if you don’t shift hands then you’re going to have to make another batch of dalgona coffee just so you don’t end up with one really buff arm and another kinda… un-toned one.

Plus, if you’re anything like me, you’re drinking a LOOOOT more coffee lately so it’s actually scary easy to approach dangerous levels of caffeine dosages. Long story short, you can totally substitute the coffee out for something that won’t leave you buzzing like someone left you in a washing machine on high.

Instagram food person and traveler-unable-to-travel-just-now Valentina Mussi (@sweetportfolio) shared some excellent non-caffeinated frothy dream drinks which, besides saving me from death by coffee, are much, much, easier to whip up—literally. There’s classics like chocolate and strawberry (team strawberry represent!), but it’s only a matter of time before we get a big salted caramel wave, bet on it.

It’s still a fair bit of sugar per serving, but I think we could all use a bit more sweetness in our lives right now.
