Here’s something we have to talk about right now: inclusivity in crafting pandemic solutions and protective equipment. The Conversation wrote about the stigma that Muslim women face and how donning face masks has been changing people’s perceptions on wearing face coverings such as hijabs, burkas or niqabs. That’s good news that hopefully leads to the conversation of making face masks hijab-friendly.
We’ve all heard and read stories about how the COVID-19 crisis has been more difficult for people living in the margins. Women face threats of violence and harassment, lack access to sanitary products and are burdened with emotional labor. Persons with Disabilities lack access to mobility as well as essential goods and services such as information channels. Additionally, the Duterte administration has implemented COVID-19 policies that have been called anti-poor—from its reluctance to conduct free mass testing to its measures hinging on a pasaway narrative. Another thing that has been overlooked in crisis response is the needs of the Muslim community. How are we helping our Muslim siblings keep safe?
