These hijab-friendly ear savers are our new inclusive faves

Here’s something we have to talk about right now: inclusivity in crafting pandemic solutions and protective equipment. The Conversation wrote about the stigma that Muslim women face and how donning face masks has been changing people’s perceptions on wearing face coverings such as hijabs, burkas or niqabs. That’s good news that hopefully leads to the conversation of making face masks hijab-friendly.

We’ve all heard and read stories about how the COVID-19 crisis has been more difficult for people living in the margins. Women face threats of violence and harassment, lack access to sanitary products and are burdened with emotional labor. Persons with Disabilities lack access to mobility as well as essential goods and services such as information channels. Additionally, the Duterte administration has implemented COVID-19 policies that have been called anti-poor—from its reluctance to conduct free mass testing to its measures hinging on a pasaway narrative. Another thing that has been overlooked in crisis response is the needs of the Muslim community. How are we helping our Muslim siblings keep safe?

Enter ear savers. These products are usually marketed as a type of face mask that prevents your ears from getting sore, but they also act as hijab-friendly face masks—normal face masks with ear loops are hard to put on for hijabi women. Here’s where you can find (fashionable!) ear savers you can purchase and even donate.

Kamila’s 4AM Art

This hydrangea-cotton and pearl ear saver from Kamila’s 4AM Art is both functional and elegant. And the best part? It doubles as a cute floral bracelet with a circle lock. Try pairing it with their gray hemp mask for a chic contrast.

The shop turns real blossoms into wearable art so if you have a favorite flower, ask their shop for their other designs. Who knows? Maybe this could replace that gloom that’s been wearing you down with a little bloom.

Mother Sews Best

Are you a fan of faux leather? Let mama take care of it. Mother Sews Best has an assortment of faux leather ear savers with 13 colors to choose from. It has plastic snaps at the end so it’s no hassle to put it on and take it off.

Don’t think your color of choice fits the face mask you own? Their Instagram shop also has multiple designs for three-layered cloth face masks. Match the ear savers with floral silhouettes or bold prints.

Anichas

These ear savers from Anichas remind us of scrunchies and we’re living for it. You can also purchase face masks with similar floral and checkered patterns to get a dainty combo. It’s giving us major garden picnic vibes.

Their shop specializes in hair accessories such as hair bows and headbands. If you’ve been missing dolling up, try adding a little flair to your hair.

Masks Manila

Prefer your ear savers with buttons on both ends? You can take your pick among Mask Manila’s stylish ear savers.  They have a variety in light pastels and darker tones. Not a fan of prints? They also have them in plain and mixed colors.

True to their name, you can also order face masks in neutrals or stripes from Masks Manila. Together, they make for a trendy pair.

LikhaNicolas

A lot of people are into crochet these days but for those who have yet to master the art but want to get their hands on knitted goodies, these ear savers from LikhaNicolas could be what you’re looking for.

Their shop offers customized ear savers in single or multiple colors. You can also choose a flower or star-shaped button to make yours extra special. The shop has also been donating to medical practitioners which is a big plus.
