In the Farmers and Fisherfolk’s Month Launch held earlier today, the Department of Agriculture (DA) announced actor and singer James Reid as the new Ambassador on Food Security.
Along with the announcement of his position, Reid and the DA officials launched the agency’s “Plant, Plant, Plant Program.” In an Instagram post, Reid shared his excitement over his new position and the plans that he and the DA have in store. The actor also teased some other plans that he has been developing over the quarantine period.
In an online press conference, agriculture spokesperson Noel Reyes said that the actor himself volunteered for the role. Reyes also gave context to Reid’s appointment, saying that the actor is actually part of a group of people involved in the research and development of hydroponics, a gardening strategy that grows plants without soil but with the help of mineral nutrients.
Reid also called on the younger generation to be more involved saying, “The farmers and fisherfolk are the backbone and heartbeat of our economy. So I’d like to encourage the younger generation to be more involved and support the farmers and fisherfolk.”
Reid’s new position calls on him to inform the public about sustainable food security as well as affordable food accessibility. His duties also include “[encouraging] the youth and other advocates [to recognize] the important roles of farmers and fishers, their hard work, and their valuable contributions to the country.”
