As someone who went straight to the cinema for the premiere of “Mamma Mia” in 2008 and also forced my parents to buy me a DVD of the film so I can continue reliving the ABBA experience from the comfort of my home, I am always on my toes for any “Mamma Mia” news.
So when The Daily Mail reported that Judy Craymer, the producer behind the original Broadway musical and the 2018 movie sequel is thinking of doing a third “Mamma Mia” movie, well, I’m already revisiting the ABBA lyrics I printed out 12 years ago.
While on lockdown, Craymer has been giving some thought to creating the third movie. “I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months,” She said in the interview. “I think one day there will be another film because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it.”
Craymer already has plans to use the four new songs that ABBA wrote for a virtual concert.
The sequel, “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again,” was released in 2018 to mixed reviews. Most of the positive reviews praised the addition of Lily James as young Donna and the amazing performance of Cher as Donna’s (supposedly dead) mother. “Here We Go Again” also introduces a little plot point that might become a hurdle in creating the third movie: Meryl Streep’s character, the lovely, energetic and charismatic Donna, is actually dead.
Although the sequel only featured snippets of Meryl Streep, the scenes she did appear in were electric. Still, I’m hopeful that the third movie will bring back the cast in full, hopefully with Cher along for the ride.
