ICYDK, Studio Ghibli recently opened their own official store. Called “GBL,” they’ve been releasing official clothing merch like “My Neighbour Totoro” Hawaiian shirts (betcha didn’t think you’d hear those words together).
This month, they’re rolling out two official “Kiki’s Delivery Service” dresses: two frocks, one cream and another dark blue, that look like the plucky trainee witch’s iconic outfit. With just a little embroidered broom on the chest for the dark blue version and an embroidered drawing of a witch and her cat on a broom for the cream, the dresses are witchy but not costumey. The style is reminiscent of mori kei, the shortlived alternative fashion style in Japan focused on looking like a forest witch or fairy that’s seeing a bit of a resurgence because of cottagecore.
The product page of the dresses are in Japanese, but speaking as someone who got way, way into J-fashion in college, don’t let that daunt you. All you need is a handy translation app and maybe the help of a good shopping service, and you’ll be able to pretend you’re a young witch practicing magic in the woods, black cat in tow, and not living in an increasingly dystopic hellscape. (In this alternate world, you’re not living in a country that’s been plunged into recession.)
