Another Philippine cinema gem is coming to Netflix on Nov 15, starring Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Enchong Dee in their new movie “Alter Me.”
If you’re a fan of strictly established relationships growing a deeper bond over time, “Alter Me” will be your new favorite movie. The film follows HR manager Aimee (Jasmine Curtis-Smith) who seeks the mentorship of popularly desired escort, Uno (Enchong Dee) to help her better connect with people and understand her own emotions. Their relationship deepens as he opens her heart to unexpected new feelings.
Beyond the exciting trope between the two characters, the film builds importance towards the new age of social media, where we find ourselves altering who we are to fit into the different worlds either we, or others have created for us. “Nowadays, in the advent of technology and social media, we put on different masks and we create our own worlds. Hoping, that in that world we would be able to find the love and fulfillment we have always been seeking. Not realizing that the true change or ‘altering’ we have to do is always dependent on who we are and how honest we are to ourselves,” said director RC Delos Reyes in the movie’s press release.
The film also touches on the online phenomenon, the Twitter Alterverse. If you’ve seen the topic of alter accounts on your Twitter and find yourself confused, the Alterverse is “rife with images of male bodies in promiscuous poses and men in uniforms wearing, well, only half of their uniforms.“ This space (inhabited by women as well) serves as a haven for those who wish to express themselves in a bare or sexual way. Offering the user freedom with their own bodies and a power to express parts of themselves that are otherwise hidden. And having a Filipino fIlm like “Alter Me” explore what is known to be a taboo topic in our country is definitely something worth investing our time and curiosity in.
