For whatever reason, podcasts are the IT thing now. Spotify just released a new feature called “Music + Talk” that caters to that. It’s exactly what it sounds like: It allows creators to play music during their shows, which opens up Filipino creators to new forms of content.
Take Jim Bacarro and Saab Magalona’s newest pod, which launched alongside the feature. Called “Makinig Ka Muna,” the show has the couple reading letters sent in by their listeners and giving them advice and making playlists for them. “This is the soundtrack of your lives,” the couple joke in the first episode. BTW, that episode itself is pretty spicy: Entitled “When Your Boyfriend Has No Ambition,” Jim and Saab dish advice to someone whose boyfriend is a bum (or as Jim describes, part of the bum nash). It gets personal real quick, and Saab shares her own experience with an ex-boyfriend who also didn’t have that drive to move his life forward. Long story short: It’s not fun to be the stand-in mother to an adult baby.
It’s a different experience compared to their other show “Wake Up With Jim and Saab.” The biggest factor is that it lets the musical couple flex their music knowledge. I won’t spill the rest of the playlist, but the first song they have on is “Brothers on a Hotel Bed” by Death Cab for Cutie, which Hits Deep™.
Other new shows to hit up: “Soundtrip with Jugs & Teddy” and the cleverly named “Worms Upon A Time: An Itchyworms Podcast.” Both are fun music retrospectives by industry legends. The former has “It’s Showtime hosts” Jugs Jugueta and Teddy Corpuz, vocalists of Itchyworms and Rocksteddy respectively, talking about some of the biggest OPM hits and how they were made. “Kapag narinig nila ang kwento sa likod ng mga paborito nilang kanta, they will have a deeper appreciation of it,” says Corpuz.
Meanwhile, the latter has Jugs Jugueta joining his bandmates with musician and director Wincy Ong as the host as they go through the band’s colorful history. “Samahan n’yo ako as I look back on the 25 years of the Itchyworms. Makakasama natin ang banda—si Jugs, si Jazz (Nicolas), si Chino (Singson), at si Kelvin (Yu)—at ang mga collaborators nila na nakasama nilang gumawa sa lima nilang albums, from producers, to engineers, to video directors, to album cover artists,” Ong says in the intro of the six-part show.
