Queer Christmas flicks and Mariah Carey’s new song will make the season gay

Now that Halloween is well over and done with, it’s time for us to don our Santa hats and set up our Christmas trees. And because I am who I am, here’s a very merry and gay (both meanings) Christmas roundup for all of you.

Mariah Carey’s “Fall in Love at Christmas”

Listen, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is the perfect Christmas song. It’s fun, it’s cheery, it’s got bell chimes and whistles, and playing it makes you feel excited for the holidays. Save for Britney’s “My Only Wish (This Year),” it’s the only relevant modern Christmas song. Many artists have tried to make their own additions to the holiday canon, but none have succeeded.

This year, Mariah Carey herself said, “Hold my beer. I did it once, and I’ll do it again.”

Yes, the Queen of Christmas just made a new Christmas ditty. This time, she enlisted the help of R&B singers Khalid and Kirk Franklin for a slow crooner. “Fall in Love at Christmas” is a great song to play in the background of a party, and I can imagine the enthusiastic backup singers in the chorus would be fun to imitate and sing along to. If “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has the giddiness of being newly in love during the holidays, “Fall in Love at Christmas” is a long-term couple falling in love with each other anew over through the magic of the season.

Queer Christmas movies

Ever since Kristen Stewart’s “Happiest Season” came out, I expected to be well-fed movie-wise during the holidays. Thankfully, a number of Christmas movies with gay leads are coming out this year.

There’s “Single All The Way,” a movie starring Michael Urie and Jennifer f*cking Coolidge herself. Urie is playing Peter, a man who’s so tired of being the single person in his family that he’s convinced his best friend to pretend to be his new boyfriend. However, his mom has set him up with an absolute hottie from the gym. Based on the trailer, Peter’s going to be caught in between the gym hottie and his best friend, who may be more into him than he thinks.

Also, you know, Jennifer Coolidge. “It’s the gayest thing to happen since Mariah!” Urie said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” is also coming back, but this time as a Christmas musical movie in “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas.” Alex Newell (oh, you should’ve won that season of “The Glee Project”) will also be returning as the genderfluid Mo. In the trailer, you see her bursting out with a rendition of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and it’s absolutely perfect. The movie is going to wrap up the series (ICYDK, the show was unfortunately canceled recently), so expect a lot of heart and maybe a few tears as the singsong characters say goodbye.

“Under The Christmas Tree,” meanwhile, is a movie for the girlies. The lesbian rom-com stars Elise Bauman as marketing whiz Alma Beltran and Tattiawna Jones as Christmas tree whisperer Charlie Freemont (what a title). It’s apparently going to be a Christmassy enemies-to-lovers flick centered around finding a Christmas tree, which is so gay I can’t even.

Of course, I’d be remiss not to mention “The Bitch Who Stole Christmas,” the upcoming movie featuring RuPaul and 20 “Drag Race” alums including our very own Manila Luzon. It stars Krysta Rodriguez as a “workaholic fashion journalist” traveling to a Christmas town after her editor RuPaul assigns her to the story, Entertainment Weekly reports. As she tries to dig up the town’s spicy secrets, she finds herself “entwined in a Winter Ball competition populated by cutthroat housewives and mischievous folks seeking to destroy the holiday forever.”
