Heaven Peralejo in the latest Sponge Cola music video is our vampire of the month

The music video’s vampiric storyline is ‘an allegorical take on walking away from an unhealthy relationship’

We’re in a bit of a vampire renaissance. While there hasn’t been any big, generation-defining vamp flick a la “Twilight” yet, apps like TikTok and mediums like webtoons are filled with romantic depictions of the bloodsuckers—and people thirsting over them.

So we were fully onboard with Heaven Peralejo playing a vampire for the music video for “Kung Ako Ang Pumiling Tapusin Ito”, Sponge Cola’s latest single. Peralejo’s vampire is more of the serious and somber kind, with the music video showing her flashing back to her mysterious beau (who may have been the one who turned her?) while attempting to adjust 8to her new life as a vamp.

Directed by filmmaker Lamar Roque, the music video’s vampiric storyline is “an allegorical take on walking away from an unhealthy, toxic relationship and finding the courage to love yourself,” notes the song’s press release. It’s a fitting tribute to the song itself which, if you couldn’t tell from the title, is about the pain of being the one to end a relationship.

“Walking away, cutting clean is theoretically easy but usually isn’t. Whether it’s comfort and familiarity, an inability to be alone or whatnot, most people who leave find themselves circling back which isn’t something people tend to focus on since we usually think of the ones left behind,” says vocalist and guitarist Yael Yuzon, who penned the song along with bassist Gosh Dilay. He’s right: We tend to focus on the person who got dumped and their heartbreak, when being the person to end things can also be just as (or even more) painful.

The minimalist ballad was produced by Joey Santos, who worked on the band’s other singles “Siguro Nga,” “Labis-labis,” and “Alamat.” “Working with Joey Santos has been wonderful. From file sharing over Google Drive, to creating a dedicated WhatsApp/Telegram group, to recording and doing online shows, and most recently traveling to Dubai, I believe we’ve bonded very well. And boy are we all excited to share the sound we’ve come up with in this latest album with you all,” says drummer Tedmark Cruz.

As for the music video, the band has nothing but praises for Peralejo. “It was a treat meeting and working with Heaven Peralejo,” Cruz shared. “Being part of a project or shoot with the nicest people just makes everyone’s jobs a lot easier.”
