Indie Lipstick Brand Launches Harry Potter Line, Gets Colors All Wrong

After CoverGirl launched their limited-edition Star Wars makeup line two weeks ago, Harry Potter fans were left wondering why they didn’t get their makeup geek moment, too—until now. Well, sort of.

Indie cosmetics brand LA Splash quietly (and unofficially) released their own line of liquid-to-matte lipsticks inspired by characters from J.K. Rowling’s famous series, which inspired a million Instagram #fotd posts.

However, as diehard Potter fans have pointed out, there are several inconsistencies in the line. The most obvious one, of course, is the spelling of characters’ names: For some reason, Luna Lovegood’s last name is spelled as “Love Good,” Nymphadora Tonks’ first name is separated into “Nymph Adora,” and bizarrely, the shade inspired by Rowena Ravenclaw is named “Ravens Claw.”

Someone obviously didn’t do their research.

On top of that, the colors matched to each name are a little strange. While “Nagini,” named for Voldemort’s snake, is rightly an emerald green, “Bellatrix” is a deep, gothic shade of violet, and “Alastor” is a kooky shade of bright blue, the other shades are a little puzzling.

For instance, “Sirius” in not a black lipstick, but a midnight blue. Close enough, we suppose.

But it gets weirder when “Ravens Claw” is a dark wine hue, when the house Ravenclaw’s colors are blue and bronze. And bright pink lipstick is an uncharacteristic choice for “Hermione.” Also can someone please tell us why they chose a bright turquoise for “Snape?!”

If you’re not too particular about Harry Potter inaccuracies, though, the colors are quite stunning. “Raven Claw” is fantastic for a night out, “Love Good” is universally flattering everyday shade, and “Ginny” is a wearable coral.

All in all, we give the line a D for effort, and an A+ for bravery. These Muggles are fuming!
