Her husband Jun Santiago tells Inquirer that Miriam died in her sleep this morning at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig due to her bout with lung cancer. She has been confined there since Sept. 11. She was 71.
Miriam announced that she had stage four lung cancer in 2014 and has been in and out of the hospital for treatments. She also revealed that she was undergoing trials for a new anticancer drug, but Jun says that it didn’t work out.
The former senator recently ran for president this year but lost to Rodrigo Duterte. After the elections, she announced that she will be stepping down from her seat in the Senate once her term expired.
As of writing, Miriam’s passing has taken the top two trending spots on Twitter, with netizens tweeting out condolences using the hashtag #RIPMiriam.
