Three Filipino Artists Take Art Stage 2015

Following Art Informal’s tenth anniversary last year, the gallery began 2015 at the premier art fair of Southeast Asia. In fulfillment of their recent thrust to bring its artists to an international platform, contemporary artists Christina Quisimbing Ramilo, Eugenia Alcaide and Jason Montinola ‘s works were showcased at Art Stage Singapore this past weekend by the art initiative. Coming from different backgrounds and skilled in different mediums, the three converged on one stage.

Although unable to fly to Singapore to see her work showcased, Eugenia Alcaide shared the motives behind her silkscreen and thread use in her portraits. “My inspiration basically is my medium. Simple, yet when I see it and its complex lines that can be created with proper thread manipulation, it never fails to amaze me.” Her most recent favorite work, she explains “veers away from my usual subjects, which are portraits.” “Untitled” is a thread on silk piece featuring a pair of hands. Alcaide, with all her work, tries to experiment to come up with something very fresh that stands out in her exhibit’s set of self-portraits.

Fellow exhibitor, Christina Quisimbing-Ramilo, alternatively, favors a self-portrait among her creations. Entitled “Be,” it consists of sandpaper and is drawn and painted on a wood panel. The contemporary artist-slash-UP professor describes this multimedia piece as a tribute to the significant women in her life. “Women who’ve made a positive mark, from my grandmothers, mother, sister, teachers, mentors, and friends”, she reveals. Most of her other displays are inspired by weather, like “Tropical Depression,” “Cyclone,” and “Precipitation,” to name a few.

Arriving in Manila from nearby Singapore earlier today, Quisimbing-Ramilo counts meeting celebrated London duo Gilbert and George as a major highlight. The two exhibited new work as exhibited by German art gallery ARNDT, just one of the represented countries in this flagship retrospective of art.

The two women were very excited to kick off the year presenting to an international audience, and are looking forward to displaying their work in exhibits throughout the year.
