Why Melania Trump’s Response to Her Husband’s Latest Scandal Is Disturbing

Over the weekend, Donald Trump found himself in another scandal when a video clip of him talking about sexually harassing women leaked.  He quickly issued an “apology” and so did his wife Melania.

Donald’s apology quickly turned into a way to lambast Hillary Clinton and even her husband Bill is not surprising at all. Melania’s apology, however, was generic and out of touch. She’s sorry for what her husband had said, but does she realize that he also should be sorry for what he actually did? Her statement may be short but it’s very telling: “The words my husband used are unacceptable and offensive to me. This does not represent the man I know. He has the heart and mind of a leader. I hope people will accept his apology, as I have, and focus on the important issues facing our nation in the world.”

Furthermore, why is she the one also asking for an apology for something her husband did (and is continually doing)? Too much of that old battered wife syndrome, if you ask me. Look at how she even insisted that the man in the clip “does not represent the man I know,” just like how women who are subject to abuse say, “He’s not like that, It’s not him who’s doing it.”

Melania shouldn’t have apologized. It’s true that she’s caught in an awkward position to defend her husband and present a united front that hopes to soon occupy The White House, her releasing a statement just proves the misogyny her husband is promoting. If a man makes a mistake, it’s the woman’s fault. Every time Donald fumbles, Melania is right there to say that it wasn’t the man she knows who did it.

Tic-Tac, the breath mint company which Donald mentioned in the clip, was even more sincere in disassociating their label from the presidential candidate.

And let’s not forget, how Robert De Niro didn’t hold back either.
