Music Festival Makeup That Won’t Melt Off

Wanderland may be over, but don’t forget that we still have MTV Music Evolution featuring hip-hop all-stars Naughty by Nature and apl.de.ap., Closeup Forever Summer with folk duo Angus & Julia Stone in the afternoon, followed by DJ Martin Garrix at night, and the Dream Fields Music Festival with, uh, Robin Thicke headlining.

And if you’ve ever seen model Jessica Yang at a music festival, you’ll notice that she’s all over the place. Dancing, running around, taking pictures—all while looking fresher than you. Sure, the flowy mini-dress helps, but how does she fake not having any actual sweat glands?

At our shoot, Jessica whips out her phone and shows me a photo of her freshly made-up face, taken upon arriving at this year’s Laneway Festival in Singapore. Five snaps later, there she is eight hours after, hanging with friends at the mall, her face glistening with a light sheen of sweat, but her makeup is still intact. “See? Everything is still there, except my eyebrow makeup faded a bit,” she testifies.

So what is this sorcery? We took apart Jessica’s music festival beauty routine to find out.

BASE
The first thing she hands me is a Ziploc bag of sunscreen and foundation with SPF. Believe it or not, everything from her base to her powder foundation has nothing less than SPF 25 in it. The process of application is a little tedious, but if you want to look pretty and stay protected under the sun, Jess has this regimen down pat.

The first thing that goes on Jessica’s face is MAC Prep + Prime Face Protect with SPF 50, then Shiseido UV Protective Liquid Foundation with SPF 43—“The best I’ve tried!” she exclaims.

Every two hours, Jessica mists her face with MAC Charged Water, pats on sunblock, then sets it with MAC Lightful Marine Bright Foundation with SPF 25.

SUNBLOCK
“For sunblock, my favorite is Sunplay Super Block with SPF 130. I got this in Taiwan. It’s the highest available!” Jessica tells me while shaking a near empty bottle. Her other favorites include Shiseido UV Protector with SPF 50 and Nivea Sun Moisturising Collagen Protect Sunblock for her body.

MAKEUP
For a little color, Jessica moisturizes her lips with Nivea Lip Butter in Raspberry Rose, lines them with MAC Lip Pencil in Subculture, then fills them in with moisturizing lip product like Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Honey Douce.

Finally, when it comes to her eyes, she also keeps it pretty simple: A wash of MAC Paint Pot in Groundwork, set with MAC Eye Shadow in Espresso. Her eyeliner is the holy grail of every girl who has been spurned by runny eyeliner: K-Palette 1 Day Tattoo Eyeliner in Jet Black.

The long-lasting pentel-type liner is also good for another cute trick: If you’ll notice, Jessica drew these cute little dots under her eyes. “I just saw it on Instagram by this makeup artist I follow! I forgot her name, but it looked so cool!”

Now go forth and be fresher than Will Smith in the ’90s.
