While you’re watching the rerun in your living room, you might be curious about the award-winning shows and movies. Are they worth a watch? Should you catch them in the cinema and Netflix?
We make your life a little easier by listing down what you should watch and binge on based on the Golden Globes winners list. And if you’ve already seen one of them, it doesn’t hurt to watch again, right?
#1 The Crown
Biographical drama The Crown was one of the big winners of the night as they bagged Best Drama and Best Actress for Claire Foy. This Netflix show revolves around the Royal Family during Queen Elizabeth II’s early reign. It’s so good that several people pointed out similarities between the actors and the real people. The Crown was also renewed for a second season and have four more coming to cover a decade of the Queen’s life. So you have enough time to catch up.
#2 The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
If you’re into celebrity crime stories, The People vs. O.J. Simpson will be your cup of tea. This show won Best TV Movie and Sarah Paulson got the Best TV Movie Actress nod. In case you’re not familiar with it, this is a retelling of O.J. Simpson’s high-profile murder trial back in 1994. His lawyer back then was Robert Kardashian, Sr., the late dad of Kim Kardashian.
#3 The Night Manager
Two words on why you should watch this: Tom Hiddleston―who won Best Actor in a TV Movie for The Night Manager. This crime-drama was adapted from the novel of the same name and it’s about a hotel manager who turns into a spy tasked to expose the arms trade in Washington D.C. Sounds heavy, I know, but also so intriguing.
#4 La La Land
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling’s follow-up to Crazy, Stupid Love and Gangster Squad, La La Land snagged the most awards including Best Film, Actor, Actress, and Director. This film tells of how a struggling actress and jazz musician made ends meet in the big city. And if their Golden Globes sweep is any indication, the film might also dominate the Oscars this February. I already saw posters of La La Land in cinemas yesterday, and I may just watch it on my spare time since their pairing is so endearing.
#5 Elle
French film Elle is a nail-biting psychological thriller about a woman hunting down the man who raped her. Again, another heavy film, but you don’t see that kind of plot everyday. Lead actress Isabelle Huppert won a Golden Globe for Best Actress and the film itself won Best Foreign Language. Elle was also in the running for Best Foreign Language Film in the Oscars but wasn’t nominated. Nonetheless, it’s worth a watch if it will be shown here in the future.
#6 Nocturnal Animals
Tom Ford’s latest film Nocturnal Animals also won big with Aaron Taylor-Johnson winning Best Supporting Actor. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams, and is about an ex-husband’s revenge plot. The story itself is intriguing, however, I’m more curious about Aaron’s performance especially since his Golden Globe win was a surprise to most.
#7 Atlanta
If by chance you have Childish Gambino (aka, Donald Glover) on your playlist, then you’ll love his show Atlanta. It won Best Comedy or Musical, and it’s about two cousins who are working on their rap careers. Not only does it highlight Gambino’s musical chops, you’ll also see why he got that Best Actor in Comedy or Musical nod.
#8 Fences
When I saw Fences‘ trailer a few months back, I knew that this film would win awards right off the bat. Starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis (who won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress), it revolves around the struggles of a black family in the US in the `50s. It’s poised to get nods at the Oscars and we might even see the first female to win Best Cinematographer this year.
