A Guide to Weirdly Shaped Makeup Sponges and What They Do

Makeup sponges are a blessing to us all. Without them, we’d be living with patchy makeup and foundation-stained fingers. When the BeautyBlender came about a couple of years back, makeup junkies everywhere stocked up on these pink sponges.

Anyway, with the rising demand for makeup sponges, brands have also thought of ways to make them unique. By that, we mean either they’re ingenious or just plain “what?”

Stila Double-Ended Blending Sponge

06

If the classic Beauty Blender is a teardrop shape, this one from Stila has a cinch in the middle . It also has the same functions—the rounded part is for buffing and the pointed end is for blending hard-to-reach areas. Pretty basic. Available at Rustan’s The Beauty Source.

Morphe Stiletto Beauty Sponge

03

This is also a double-purpose sponge with pointed and rounded ends. Only this one looks like it’ll poke you in the eye. We get that the pointed end is for hard-to-reach areas, but we might think twice before putting that Louboutin-like tip near our eyes. Kidding aside, Morphe does promise that the sponge is soft and can blend your foundation well. Available online.

Beauty Blender BodyBlender

01

Imagine taking a teardrop-shaped sponge and flattening it—you’ll get the BodyBlender. This is a slightly bigger sponge mostly used for body makeup like self-tanning lotion and bronzer. Available online.

Real Techniques Miracle Sculpting Sponge

04

Mainly used for contour and highlight, the Miracle Sculpting Sponge has small and large sides that look like small table lamps. The former is for highlighting while the latter is for contouring your cheekbones. It’s a good tool for creams, but it doesn’t work well with powders. So don’t drop your fan brushes just yet. Available online.

Happy Skin Air Touch Sponge

The tapered corner of Happy Skin’s Air Touch Sponge is suited for the contours of the face. It’ll also give your foundation an airbrushed finish. You can also use this with your makeup primer, cream blushes, and powders. Available at Greenbelt 5.

Real Techniques Miracle Diamond Sponge

02

Another Real Techniques sponge that caught our attention is this diamond-shaped one. This has 13 facets which you can use on your cheeks, eyes, nose, forehead, and mouth. Plus points for having multiple uses, and a minus for looking more like a marble than a diamond. Available online.

Molly Cosmetics Silisponge

05

This is…a confusing sponge. With hopes of avoiding makeup wastage since regular sponges soak up more foundation, Molly Cosmetics came up with a silicone sponge. It’s a clear jelly-like “sponge” used like a regular makeup blender—add product on it and buff. Some are even recreating it by using bra inserts. What’s great about it is that it does blend your foundation well and it’s hygienic. However, some are also not impressed as it doesn’t do anything groundbreaking. Available online.
