WATCH: ‘To The Bone’ Is an Honest Look at Anorexia

It looks like Netflix is really out to cut away from our sleeping hours with its latest original movie To the Bone, premiering on July 14. The new film follows the story of Ellen, who suffers from anorexia and her fight against it as she’s admitted to a non-traditional rehab facility.

Lily Collins personally suffered from eating disorders as a teenager, and so this one hits close to home. She shared, “I had just written the chapter in my book (Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me) about my history with eating disorders the week before I received the script for this movie. So it was like the universe literally throwing it in my face saying, this is something you need to address either for yourself or for other young people going through it out there.”

You might get a little #shookt when you see how Lily is almost just skin and bones in the film. She seems to have immersed herself fully into character for this one. Through proper medical assistance, she lost a lot of weight for the role.

She did fear going through it, of course, “At first it was definitely a scary process. It was something that I thought is risky, because there’s a fine line between facing something head-on and succeeding, or falling back into it.”

Lily persevered, still, seeing how the series could help address the problem and the people who are still battling it, “But I knew that, this time, I would be held accountable for it. I would be [losing weight] under the supervision of a nutritionist and surrounded by all these amazing women on set. So, I knew that I would be in a safe environment to explore this.”

The film is written and directed by Marti Noxon, who also suffered from anorexia. So based on how there are personal experiences involved in this script, it looks like we’re in for a good and enlightening show.

You’ll also catch Keanu Reeves in the movie, where he plays Lily’s doctor. As if you needed more reasons to tune in.
