Dr. Vicki Belo and Dr. Hayden Kho were met with criticism while on their honeymoon in Italy. Especially after Vicki stated that she likes to “pretend to be rich” while living in their lavish Italian villa.
In an Instagram video, Vicki showed her followers the exterior of their villa and said, “You know what I love doing when I’m here? I love to pretend that I’m rich.” She also panned to uniformed helpers who are setting up the home, a spacious garden, and a big pool.
“I mean you can pretend for two days and you don’t have to spend for the upkeep,” she added.
This was met with mixed reactions from netizens. Some defended Vicki’s statement and found it as her being “humble” and “thankful.” One netizen, who claimed that she worked for Belo Medical for five years, emphasized that Vicki uses her money to give to charitable organizations.
Others pointed out that it’s merely a boastful display of wealth, and just came off as greedy.
It’s no secret that Vicki and Hayden are running a successful business and is a well-off family. Their extravagant wedding and reception are proof of that. But that could also mean that they saved years ahead for the celebration and honeymoon.
Admittedly though, Vicki’s statement may have sounded more insensitive than she intended. People have every right to call her out on it, but they shouldn’t meddle with how she or her family chooses to spend their money.
So what’s the lesson here? Work hard, splurge on the things you’ve been dreaming of, and don’t “pretend to be rich” to boast.
