I have a close age gap with my mom and this is how our relationship goes

We’re a few days into May and Mother’s Day is fast approaching. In my family, however, May brings on a different life event, my mom’s birthday (also, my parents’ anniversary). Yup, this month has always been a jam-packed one ever since I could remember. In light of these events, let me share some insight into the relationship I have with my mom.

My mom had me at a pretty young age so our gap isn’t that far apart, which makes us quite close. When I’m not too tired from work or out and about with my friends, I talk to my mom about my day and the things I saw on social media. Sometimes, this makes me feel like I’m in high school again “gossiping” and sharing stories, and watching cat videos on Instagram. I have to admit, sometimes my mom is even more up to date with certain topics in pop culture, especially in the world of Korean dramas.

Aside from our talks, we also share clothes. I have some of her stuff from the ’90s and she gets the clothes that I don’t fit in anymore. “Sharing” a closet with your mom definitely has its perks. There have been many times where I have tried to convince her to buy something so I can borrow it later on. Sometimes it works. Most times it doesn’t. But unlike my brother, my dad thinks my mom spoils me with her non-occasion gifts for me. And maybe she does but I’m her firstborn child so it’s understandable. I also get a fair amount of hand-me-downs from her. I remember when Gucci loafers were blowing up everywhere, I told I her how much I loved the style of it. To my surprise she told me she had a pair from when she was my age that she wasn’t wearing anymore. She went looking for it and asked me to try it on. It’s important to note that my mom’s feet are a size smaller than mine so the chances of them fitting me were quite slim. But to my surprise, they fit like a glove and they’re one of my favorite pairs of shoes now. This also works the other way around. When we’re going to the beach, my mom asks me if I have tank tops I won’t be bringing so she can use them instead. Just the other week, she was planning to go out with my dad and asked to see the different crop tops I had (I have lots, probably too many) she chose a bright yellow one and paired it with high-waisted jeans and heels. Yeah, my mom’s cooler than you.

The older I get the more I realize how much I’m just like my mom. The overly caring side I have for my loved ones most probably comes from my mom. Her relationship with my dad in a way translates to how I am in mine. The surprise gifts and homemade boxes of s’mores? Yup, got that from my momma. She also has a crafty side that I think I picked up. She makes tiny boats for a baby shower giveaway and I make paper flowers for a gift box.

We definitely don’t get along all the time but let’s be real, no mother and daughter duo does. But I’ll always turn to her for some life advice like where to buy nice curtains, what roads to pass to avoid traffic (because Waze always lies), and eventually tips on how to raise my own children in the future.

So, let me end this story by saying, happy birthday, mother dearest. Thank you for the nine-month ride in your belly.
