Awkwafina: First female Asian host of ‘SNL’ in 18 years

It is a beautiful time for Asian women, most especially Awkwafina. The actress has had a great year so far starring in films Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. We’re sure she’s been busy so we’re happy to hear that she will be hosting Saturday Night Live on Oct. 6.

This is an amazing opportunity but it’s even more special because according to Bustle, the show hasn’t had a female Asian host in 18 years. “The last Asian woman to host Saturday Night Live was Lucy Liu who took on that role on Dec. 16, 2000 with Jay-Z as the musical guest.”

We don’t know why it has been so long for them to invite another Asian woman but, we are excited nonetheless. Congratulations, Awkwafina!
