We’re not going to lie, we’ve been checking on the results of the US Midterm Elections and so far, it hasn’t disappointed. There were a lot of milestones for the House of Representatives, like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez becoming one of the youngest elected congresswoman in New York, and Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar became the first Muslim-American women to win a House seat, among many other things.
But one race we’ve been keeping a close eye on is between Gina Ortiz-Jones, who is a Filipina running under the Democratic Party, and Will Hurd for a seat in Texas’ 32nd congressional district.
As of a few hours ago, several media outlets have named Hurd, a Republican candidate, the winner with over 100,000 votes from 342 precincts. According to The New York Times, Jones is trailing by only 1,150 votes (0.6 percent). However, the publication has withdrawn their call, echoing AP News’ statement that the results are still too close to call.
The Fast Company also discovered the discrepancy last night when NYT put a check next to Hurd’s name despite Jones taking a slim lead. A reporter from Texas Tribune tweeted that he heard there was an “error in Medina numbers on the SOS website” which might’ve caused the confusion.
Am hearing this is due to an error in Medina County numbers on the SOS website… https://t.co/PVZydA5VW4

But right now, Hurd is named the winner but Jones can still call for a recount. Dallas News cited that it’s plausible since the difference is less than 10 percent, meaning that Jones can still win the dominantly Republican state. (As of writing, no recount has been called yet.)
Gina Ortiz-Jones is an Air Force veteran who aims to be the first Filipino-American openly gay member of Congress in Texas. Her platforms include programs focusing on LGBT and women’s rights, focusing on quality healthcare and giving people jobs.
We’ll keep you updated on the final results of the race. For now, we wish you luck, Gina!
