You don’t have to be a nervous wreck while flying

If you’re reading this, I’ll be in Shanghai, China already, which is my first-ever international trip. But since I’m writing this before my flight, I’m envious of my future self because she’s probably calm and enjoying life.

Quick story time: I’ve only ridden a plane twice and the last time was in 2009. Both times I felt jitters because I have a slight fear of heights. I’m that person who hates the suspense of waiting for the takeoff and the landing, then I’ll feel better once we’re in the air. It’s probably going to be the same cycle in a couple of days and I’m still psyching myself out.

I know there are many people who might feel the same way as me. So here’s what I’ve been doing to mentally prepare myself. If you have your own tips, feel free to share them and help a nervous sister out.

Distract yourself

Right now, I’m keeping myself busy with work and listing down what I need to pack. I’m also watching YouTube videos and playing video games in between. Basically anything that’ll keep my mind off flying.

Don’t forget books

A three-hour flight is the perfect time to finish a book so don’t forget to pack one or two in your handcarry. You can also download E-books on your phone/tablet. Again, this will keep you busy and calm your nerves a bit.

Avoid movies and articles about flying

There’s a good chance that they’re about some tragic incident on a plane—or similar to the United Airlines dragging incident. Anyway! Avoid scenes and stories that’ll trigger some sort of fear in you. I mean, why do you think I’m only watching stand-up comedy and wasting time on a cooking game during my free time?

“Just sleep through it”

This is what I’ve been repeating in my head so when the plane is about to take off or land, at least I’m calm and asleep. Of course, this probably won’t work but at least I tried, right? If you’re someone who easily nods off wherever you are, then lucky you!

Find support

Thank goodness for friends, my boyfriend, and my mom who have been sharing travel tips. More importantly, telling me not to freak out during the flight. Do the same and find the right people who’ll help you out and answer your nervous queries.
