Theory roundup: The ladies of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ are the future

The Avengers: Endgame trailer came out over a week ago, and it personally took me a while to process everything. What’s gonna happen to Tony Stark? Is this really Captain America’s last movie? Where’s Captain Marvel?!

Naturally, the theories of what’ll happen next in the Avengers franchise have already come out. But what we’re interested in is how the women—those who survived Thanos’ snap—will change the course of Endgame. It’s only fair since Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said that the future of the MCU “will soon be female.” Here are our theories and thoughts for the upcoming film.

Captain Marvel

Since the end of Infinity War, it’s been widely speculated that Captain Marvel will defeat Thanos in Endgame. She’s a cosmic superhero with training from an alien army after all, plus Nick Fury paged her before he turned into dust. It only makes sense, especially after seeing how powerful she is in the trailers and the rumors that she can move planets. We have a feeling that if she’s not going to battle Thanos alone, she might even bring a Kree army with her.

As we’ve mentioned in previous theories, it’s also possible that Captain Marvel, with the help of Ant-Man, will be able to access the Soulchamber within the Soul Stone. In case you didn’t know, both of them have the ability to traverse the multiverse and Quantum Realm. Once inside the Soulchamber, they’ll be able to help free the souls of the people killed in the snap.

Another popular theory going around is Captain Marvel saving Tony Stark in space while she zooms to the Earth after Fury contacted her. However, there’s another lady who may do that job as well.

Pepper Potts

Before the Endgame trailer dropped, Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Pepper Potts, was photographed wearing the Rescue suit. In the comics, Tony created it so Pepper would wear it in the future.

As mentioned earlier, Tony is stuck in space and he’s recording a sort of good-bye message for his fiancée. If Captain Marvel isn’t gonna save him, Pepper might just do the job. Imagine: She receives the message, stumbles upon the Rescue suit and wears it, and she flies into space. Who knows? Maybe we’ll see Rescue fending off enemies in the final battle.

Black Widow

Natasha Romanoff’s role in the grand scheme of Endgame is a bit murky. In the sense that anything could happen and her plot has been unpredictable thus far. I mean, I still can’t process how she went from kissing Captain America in Winter Soldier to suddenly becoming Hulk’s love interest in Civil War.

An obvious plot point for Endgame is Black Widow discovering Clint Barton as Ronin (formerly known as Hawkeye). She’ll probably convince him to rejoin the Avengers and fight Thanos to take revenge for his family disappearing in The Snappening.

There is also one fan theory that suggests Black Widow might sacrifice herself to save her teammates and to retrieve the Soul Stone. Although I’m not sure if the “kill the one you love” rule still applies now that Thanos is in possession of it in exchange of Gamora’s soul. (It still hurts.) But Black Widow is also slated for a solo movie, so take that theory with a grain of salt.

Okoye

With Black Panther turned into dust in Infinity War and Shuri also presumed dead, Okoye might serve as the temporary leader of Wakanda—both its constituents and military forces. We understand that the Wakandans will still be shaken up by the sudden death of their king. But at some point, we know that they’ll stand up with the help of Okoye and the Dora Milaje, as well as M’Baku and the Jabari.

We can just imagine Okoye exacting revenge for T’Challa (since she is his righthand warrior) and screaming “Wakanda forever!!!” during the final battle. Ugh, that’d be so good.

Nebula

Nebula was only shown briefly in the Endgame trailer, and it’s unclear whether she’s with Tony or not. Though we do see her touching what looks like a shoulder, and we can only assume that it’s Tony’s.

If she did stay, we see Nebula as the one who’ll try to motivate Tony out of his rut. Her adoptive father, Thanos, did kill her adoptive sister, Gamora. Plus, Nebula’s been after him since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1. She’s probably more furious and out for blood at this point.

CBR noted that Nebula could defeat Thanos in Infinity War by playing the loyalty card—that obviously didn’t happen. Although, in the comics, she played a big role in retrieving the gauntlet despite becoming the bad guy herself. But this is the MCU we’re talking about, they’re known for revamping stories which has been advantageous for them so far.

Agent Carter

“Wait, isn’t she dead?” Yup, she is. But Agent Peggy Carter made an appearance as a locket photo and, if time-travel theories are correct, it’s possible that she and Captain America will have a reunion in the past. (Plus, Hayley Atwell hinted that she’s coming back for Endgame.)

So, how will Peggy play into the equation? She’s an adept leader and would help the Avengers in fixing the wrongs of the past to prevent the Infinity War. This is a shot in the dark, though. Our biggest question is how Cap would face her after making out with her niece in Civil War.
