Don’t let anyone tell you how to be a girl

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CONVERSE

Society always dictated how we’re ought to be. Girls should have long hair, boys should cut it short. Girls should wear dresses, boys should wear pants. Girls should be submissive, boys should take control. Girls should stay at home, boys should run the business. Girls should wear dainty shoes, boys wear sneakers. But this time around, that is not the case anymore, you do you and I do me.

At the helm of women empowerment and drive for equality, Converse, a brand who always encourages you to show your personality, created a collection called “Love the Progress.” Designed by women to inspire others about love, unity, and community.

This campaign also uncovered different stories of girls all around the globe, all doing their own thing and not letting society dictate how they should act. Meet our roster of inspiring women and how they themselves define being a GIRL.

Millie Bobby Brown, actress and activist

“GIRL: We are defined by who we are and not by what we look like.”

In a video clip, Millie shared a story about wearing sneakers to an awards show and it that way encouraged everyone to wear whatever they feel comfortable in. Being a girl doesn’t have to be conventional, like hey, she shaved all her hair and she looked great!

Naomi Preizler, non-conformist musician

“GIRL is to be human.”

She’s known to explore things she loves and to experiment with new things especially with her music. What drives her? To fight against things that are supposed to be impossible.

Stephanie Kurlow, Hijab ballerina

“GIRL is influential and a risk taker.”

Stephanie is a 17-year-old Australian-Russian who aims to be the first professional Hijab ballerina in the entire world. Her goal is to encourage young girls to be whoever they want to be and to chase their dreams regardless of their race, religion, or background.

Qin Yungquan, self-defense instructor

“GIRL is a warrior.”

This young Singaporean aims to believe that empowering others is the key to create a better and more equal society. She is committed to empowering everyone, especially women and children, to stay safe.

Kasia Gola, tech expert

“GIRL is disciplined, works hard, and achieves.”

Kasia founded a company called GeekGoesChic and FlowBox. She specializes in technology with the focus on fashion. Isn’t that bad ass?

Now go on and make your own definition of GIRL and inspire others in the process.
