I love Women’s Month. Not that I don’t already try to do this everyday, but it gives me a chance to celebrate myself and the women around me. For this week’s Preen Picks, I wanted to ask the ladies in the office the different women in music they listen and look up to. Some were familiar to me while I also discovered other artists I never heard of before. They also shared details about the artists that they can relate to and couldn’t help but think, “same!” Keep reading to get to know more of these women. You never know, you might just discover a new favorite.
Aly Cabral
I’ve been a fan of her since she was just starting out with the band Ourselves the Elves. She’s proven herself a versatile musician and has been a part of various projects since. She’s even gained recognition as a solo act, Teenage Granny. Also, she’s a woke feminist, which makes me love her even more. Ourselves is is set to release their first full-length album this March, Self is Universe, so I’m excited about that. They’ve already released some of the tracks, and so far, I’m obsessed with “Okay Okay I’m Wrong I’m Sorry.” – Bea Del Rio, Junior Content Creator, Preen.ph
M.I.A
I stan a lot of female musicians; Lorde, Janelle Monae, Karen O, Princess Nokia, and many more. But one of the most important musicians out there is M.I.A. She’s a rapper, a visionary, and a contemporary icon. I am always a fan of female musicians that are dismantling the patriarchal, capitalist, and overall racist system. Armi millare
I’ve always been a fan of her alternative music and classic hits since high school. The lyrics are very relatable. I would recommend you listen to “Tadhana” best and famous soundtrack of their album Capacities. Don’t be afraid of telling someone how you truly feel about them. – Joy Galura, Account Executive
Alicia Keys
I’ve Always admired Alicia Keys’ attitude and versatility. She has always been passionate, confident, and empowering, especially to women and people of color. She’s also very versatile, which is reflected in her meaningful and not one-genre-bounded songs. Carrie Brownstein
She’s one of the founding members of Sleater-Kinney, rock’s most underrated icon. It’s hard to condense in a single paragraph what i love about Brownstein, but I guess it all boils down to how multifaceted she is as an artist and performer: off-stage, she’s articulate and cerebral even a bit reserved; on stage she’s without reserve, confident, and loud. She can traverse multiple mediums, too; She’s a writer, an actress, and a director. But of course I love her best as a musician. Her guitar work is heavily influenced by punk’s greats, but listening to her play you’ll hear that she’s made a style that’s all hers alone. – Catherine Orda, Junior Content Creator, Multisport.ph
Norah Jones

Molly Rankin
like Molly Rankin of Alvvays. In an interview I read on The Guardian, I found out that in an industry where everyone—especially a band leader—is expected to be extroverted, charismatic, and comfortable with both of that, Molly has decided to embrace who she truly is: reserved and awkward. I think this resonated with a a prt buried deep in me as I also find myself pressured to be everyone else I see. I find comfort in Molly’s story and the music videos of Alvvays, which always have an old school tug, indelible items, and a splash of color. It’s like looking at old clips of a vintage camera.
