This weekend, hop in your car and drive to these beaches

Long weekend or not, I’m always thinking about my next beach trip. I’m constantly itching to escape the city and the stresses that go along with it. Sometimes just staying at home isn’t enough for me to unwind. Usually, I really need to get away and unplug and center myself when I’m on the brink of a breakdown. Luckily there are so many beach destinations near Manila. Some you can even just drive to. Imagine, just three to fours on the road, and you’ll be staring at a scenic sea view. If you feel the same way, here are five nearby beaches you can visit this weekend.

Burot Beach, Calatagan, Batangas

Distance: 130km, 3 hours and 36 minutes from Manila

Burot Beach is small and quiet, so you’re sure to enjoy a peaceful afternoon there. There are lots of resorts and Airbnbs nearby if you’re looking for a place to stay. If you’re planning for something overnight, you can also opt to pitch your own tent since there are trees for shade. The beach itself is clean and the water is clear. You can also rent a balsa that will take you to a sandbar if you want a more isolated experience.

Liwliwa Beach, San Felipe, Zambales

Distance: 196km, 3 hours and 46 minutes from Manila

Completely disconnect from the stresses of the city at Liwliwa Beach. While you’re there, try to catch some waves. If you don’t know how to surf, you can have an instructor teach you the basics. HideOut is a great place to check out. They have rooms where you can stay, skim and surfing lessons, and food. Their kubos are simple and will really make you feel one with nature.

Distance: 132km, 2 to 3 hours

If you want to spend your days at the beach and also getting some diving in, Anilao is a close destination to visit. There are lots of resorts along one strips of the beach, so just pick which one fits your needs. I suggest Dive Solana. Since you’re pretty isolated, meals are also included in their rates. There are several dive spots in the area so just consult the resort when you want to head out. If you don’t want to dive—like me—you will still see some water creature in the water like fish and even baby sharks.

White Beach, Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro

Distance: 115km, 2 hours and 30 minutes

Take note that the distance mentioned above is just for the drive going to Berberabe port. Once you’re at the port, you have to take a 45-minute boat ride. I also suggest booking everything in advance here so you have no troubles during your journey. Once you make it to Puerto Galera, you can get around by walking or tricycle. Like a lot of beaches, there are so many resorts in the area. One that is close to the beach is Victoria’s Bed and Breakfast. The rate is reasonable, the rooms are clean, and their food is great. You will most likely spot families on the beach and less rowdy groups of people. You can opt to just chill or enjoy the fun inflatables in the water.

Crystal Beach, San Narciso, Zambales

Distance: 192km, 3 hours and 36 minutes

Crystal Beach is another nearby surfing spot. Find a space under the sun or somewhere cooler underneath the many trees. You can book a room at a resort or opt to glamp instead. This a good destination for friends, since there is so much space and lots to do. Couples can also consider this beach for its romantic sunsets, island hopping, and waterfall tours.
