If you love the dramatizations of American Crime Story, you should add Delhi Crime to your to-watch list. This controversial show is based on the real events of the 2012 Delhi gang rape, where a teenager was left for dead on a bus after being raped by five men.
It’s controversial because the event reportedly “left a collective scar on the psyche of an entire country.” Plus, viewers thought that portraying the experiences of the victim would seem exploitative. However, the Delhi Crime team decided to direct the attention to the deputy commissioner of police for south Delhi Chhaya Sharma (renamed Vartika Chaturvedi in the series).
Director Richie Mehta told BBC, “To me, it all stems down to the fact that if the female DCP was not the first person to arrive at the hospital and did not get a chance to see this victim, and react the way she reacted, they probably wouldn’t have caught these guys.”
Chhaya also told the outlet she didn’t know what the result would’ve been if the police handling the case was male. “I can’t really say—it depends on the sensitivity of the officer, male or female,” she said. “But being a woman, I think it gave some credence to the case. When it’s rape, something happens to me—seeing the critical condition the victim was in, it moved me.”
