We are really killing it in the pageant scene. Our representative in the Mr. Gay World 2019, John Jeffrey “Janjep” Carlos, just took home the crown during this year’s competition in Cape Town, South Africa. This makes him the second Filipino and Asian to do so, after fellow Filipino John Fernandez Raspado, who took the crown in 2017.
Janjep is a 41-year-old businessman in Philippine media who hails from Cavite. He bested 21 other candidates in the final round of the pageant, including first runner-up Francisco Alvarado of Spain, and second runner-up Oliver Pusztan of Hungary.
Like his predecessor, Jordan Bruno, the Australian chef who won the title last year, Janjep also advocates for mental health awareness. In his introductory video, he mentioned his work for the charity Mental Health PH. He’s particularly outspoken on the fight against depression.
“Depression is real, and it has caused the tragic loss of lives. Depression is a real illness that can be treated if properly diagnosed,” he said. “With love and understanding of people undergoing depression, this illness can be transformed into wellness.”
