How do you make a movie last forever these days? Well, you make memes and you quote it to death on social media. This is what several netizens did with Four Sisters and a Wedding, a 2013 comedy film starring Toni Gonzaga, Bea Alonzo, Shaina Magdayao, Angel Locsin, and Enchong Dee.
If you haven’t seen this film at all, it’s basically about four sisters reuniting for their youngest brother’s wedding. Hilarity ensues when they try to stop it because they think his fiancée (Angeline Quinto) and her family don’t have his best interests at heart.
The plot is pretty simple, but many people remember it for its quotes. But who would’ve thought this film would be a representation of our current political climate?
I don’t mean that literally—of course the government is more difficult and f*cked up than a comedy film. But netizens were making parallels during the recent campaign and election season based on where certain stars stand.
Enchong Dee
Let’s start with Enchong Dee, who plays the baby in the family, Rebreb. In the movie, he was somewhat looked down on and his older sisters always told him what to do. But in the real world, Enchong is far from the soft-spoken character, and has been one of the most vocal celebrities about the elections.
He also expressed his support for candidates like Samira Gutoc and Neri Colmenares. And he didn’t need to be paid to encourage his fans to vote for the right people.
After the elections, he called out celebrities who “[prefer] to stay silent during non-election years, and [prefer] popularity over socio-political conversations, for me, is very much late to voice out their dismay.” Damn, Rebreb—I mean, Enchong.
Angel Locsin
Then there’s Angel Locsin, who plays the rebellious sister, Alex. You may remember her scene where she drags Mocha Uson by the hair. If you need a reminder, here it is:
It’s no secret that Angel voted for Duterte in 2016, but it looks like she’s making amends. She admitted she still supports the president, but she doesn’t agree with everything he does. Just like a lot of people who voted for Duterte, Angel believed you can still talk sense into him.
Angel expressed her support for Chel Diokno and Neri Colmenares, who is actually her nephew. She even called out the police who were giving out black propaganda tabloids last Monday.
If you ask us, Angel’s current story is similar to Alex in Four Sisters and a Wedding. She’s not perfect and made mistakes, but she’s doing everything to make up for it.
Toni Gonzaga
Toni Gonzaga went from being a surprise disappointment in Four Sisters to an actual surprise disappointment IRL. She played eldest sister, Teddie, who lied about being a teacher in Madrid. She was instead working as a waitress and a maid. Teddie later confessed and apologized to her mom in the pivotal (and meme-worthy) confrontation scene.
That’s all well and good, but people didn’t expect to see her, husband Paul Soriano, and sister Alex Gonzaga, at Duterte’s thanksgiving dinner.
“I’m unstanning” tweets in 3..2..
Is it too late now to say, “Ma, I’m sorry”? Hmmm.
Connie Reyes
The matriarch of Four Sisters and a Wedding is portrayed as doting and forever supportive of her five children. Nothing represents that more trait than Connie Reyes beaming with pride while raising her son, Vico Sotto’s hand after he was proclaimed Pasig’s youngest mayor.
I guess it’s true that mama has her favorites.
