Preen Picks: Explaining how we feel about the elections through songs

This week is emotionally draining. On top of our already existing everyday existential dread (congrats if you got through that mouthful), the election’s seeming outcome feels like the final nail in the coffin—a chilling phrase that could also pertain to our country’s future. Obviously, you know where we stand. Yeah, we’re not happy. Personally, I’ve been listening to songs about being heartbroken, ‘cause that’s how I feel about the partial results. My anxiety level has gone up.

This week, we’re checking in on our officemates too. Talking about how we feel about this election would most probably lead to a looong discussion. So instead, for this week’s Preen Picks, I asked them: If you could describe how you feel about the election results by naming one song, what would it be and why? Check out their responses below and let us know if you agree.

“In The End” by Linkin Park

I think it would be a song I would personally dedicate to the Philippines because no matter how hard I tried and fought for who and what I believe in, in the end, it doesn’t even matter because people will still hold on to their personal biases and I still got disappointed with the results. – Lyle Pendon, Junior Content Creator

“Liability” by Lorde

I remember the day after elections, on my way to work I had this song on and sis, Lorde couldn’t be further from the reality when she sang “baby really hurt me, crying in the taxi.” IDK, it’s actually a romantic heartbreak song but it’s fitting. – Christian San Jose, Junior Content Creator, Nolisoli.ph, Northern Living, Southern Living

Sabotage” by Beastie Boys

“Scheming on a thing, that’s a mirage / I’m trying to tell you now, it’s sabotage”—It’s an old song but accurate! Kakagalit eh. – MJ Estabillo, Junior Content Creator

“Rest” by Leanne and Naara

Leave it to the lyrics of the song: “When will we ever get the time to rest; and our souls are weary yet we still put it to the test” – Nina Mamonong, Account Executive

“Misery” by Maroon 5

If the elections were a song, I’d say “Misery” by Maroon 5 #throwback. It describes exactly how I and most people feel about this tbh. Like Adam said, this election really got us bad. – Marian Hukom, Junior Graphic Artist

“F*ck This Shit I’m Out”

IDK though if song nga yan. LOL. But yeah. ‘Nuff said – Chloe Cartoneros, Account Executive

“Budots”

No explanation needed. – Sam Ong, Photographer

Game of Thrones S8E5 credits song, composed by Ramin Djawadi

*warning: Spoilers ahead*

It starts to play during the ending scene when Arya, amidst the carnage of King’s Landing, sees a white horse standing nearby. The music that plays is a mash-up of two epic GOT songs: The Rains of Castamere and the Light of the Seven. Both songs spelled doom for the scenes they first appeared in, which is basically what I felt when the unofficial results were out: f*cking dread. I’m suprised there isn’t a meme yet comparing the PH to King’s Landing and our future senators (cringe)‎‎‎ to Dany and Drogon.

But Season 8 isn’t over and the people’s fight against tyranny will never end! There’s still hope yet. -Anri Ichimura, Junior Content Creator, FNB Report
