Imee Marcos is an example of how you shouldn’t comment on body size

This bears repeating: Commenting on one’s weight or appearance isn’t a nice way to greet someone. It’s neither a compliment, nor a sign of concern. It’s just downright rude.

Senator-elect Imee Marcos should take this advice. In a Headstart interview, Karen Davila asked her if she had an encounter with any of the Aquinos. She said yes, citing instances wherein she bumped into Sen. Bam Aquino in Congress, and Kris Aquino in BGC.

Imee then talked about seeing Kris, noting how thin she looked. “Sabi ko, ‘Kawawa ka naman ang payat-payat mo.’ Pero actually, inggit ako ang payat niya,” (I told her, “What a pity, you’re so thin.” But actually, I’m jealous of her thin body.)

As many know, former senator Benigno Aquino Jr. (Kris’ father) was imprisoned and assassinated during Martial Law. The president at the time was former dictator Ferdinand Marcos (Imee’s father).

We can’t say for certain if Imee meant to be snarky with her comment on Kris’ weight. Nonetheless, it’s below the belt considering that Kris has been in and out of the hospital the past few months. Last January, she revealed she’s battling a form of lupus where she’s become allergic to various medications.

Again, pointing out someone’s weight is insensitive, especially if someone has health problems affecting their body. Moreover, you shouldn’t say “it’s a pity” they look a certain way. It negatively implies their body should meet an acceptable standard. Got that?
