So, um, the Straight Pride in Boston is happening

Hey, Boston, we have a question. Why did you approve the Straight Pride parade?

The event, which was organized by Super Happy Fun America who claimed that straight people are oppressed, is officially happening on Aug. 31. SHFA president John Hugo confirmed this to The Boston Globe after meeting with Boston City Hall officials. “We will have the parade, and it’s going to be a great time. We invite anyone who wants to come, as long as they respect each other.”

According to the event’s page, it “will be held to achieve inclusivity and spread awareness of issues impacting straights in Greater Boston and beyond.  It will be a one-day event consisting of a parade followed by a flag raising ceremony.” The organizers are also proposing to have the same parade route as the Boston Pride March held last June 8.

Hugo added that conservative commentator and former Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos will be the grand marshal and mascot for the parade. He is known for his far-right views which have bordered on anti-Muslim. He and controversial conspiracy theorist Alex Jones were recently banned from Facebook for hate speech.

This is ironic considering that Hugo claims the Straight Pride isn’t anti-gay at all, saying “we’re pro-straight… we’re a sexual orientation advocacy group, and we’re a young civil rights movement.”

But if the event aims to promote equality and visibility for straight people (as if they need it), then why get a speaker who oppresses people? And why is Super Happy Fun America trying so hard to justify that straight people are discriminated on—so much that they want to add “S” to LGBTQ+?

Unfortunately, as of now, the Straight Pride is happening. It’s scary if you think about it because this just opens doors for people to organize a similar event in other place.

There’s still more than a month to go, maybe someone will have the right mind to overturn this decision.
