World Music Day 2019: It’s all about women empowerment anthems

Music has the power to make us feel emotions and send a message to the world. We’ve seen how people used this to raise awareness about world hunger, promote peace during the war, and empowering women and the LGBTQ+ community.

This year, the fight for equality has reached new heights with politicians trying to ban abortion and control women’s bodily autonomy, shaming them for what they wear, and continuously villainizing them for speaking out. So for World Music Day today, we decided to make a playlist that will motivate every woman to stand up against oppressive systems.

First, we have classics like Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.” Joining these iconic songs are 2019’s girl power anthems like Lizzo’s “Good As Hell,” which talks about self-love, and furious songs like “Nightmare” and “Mother’s Daughter” which call out the BS that women go through daily.

We also added uplifting tracks to inspire you to work hard (“Diva”), speak up on what you believe in (“Quiet”), and just be an overall badass in whatever you do (“Fighter” and “Superwoman”). Whatever it is, there is an empowering and feminist song for you and all the women in your life.

Take a listen and pass this playlist on. Happy World Music Day!
