Philippine fashion SS20: A trend forecast

By Jacqueline Ariason October 19, 2019

Spring/summer 2020 looks promising for Philippine fashion.

For Panasonic Manila Fashion Festival’s fifth anniversary, we were treated to versatile, sustainable, and innovative pieces on the runway. There were the usual designers like Yong Davalos, Cheetah Rivera, and Chris Diaz, and up-and-comers who just graduated from the SoFA Design Institute this year.

We talked about our trend predictions earlier this week, but we’re here to give you a rundown of more trends we spotted in the last four days.

Cropped terno tops

Summer came early thanks to Yong Studio.

Modern Filipiniana was a popular theme among several designers. What caught our attention was how Yong Studio and Edgar Buyan made terno-inspired pieces. The former incorporated fun summery prints and butterfly sleeves on the cropped top, while the latter played with vibrant colors for his top-and-skirt ensemble.

Just one of Edgar Buyan’s many attention-catching outfits

Glossy suits

Suits made of silk and a PVC-type material? Jaz Cerezo and John Pe Larlar brought them. Jaz’ suit is a gunmetal trench coat-style top and pants ensemble with a chunky black belt to cinch the waist. Meanwhile, John made oversized jackets that could survive rainy days.

Wet season, who?

Tulle gowns

Steph Tan and Veejay Floresca are both known for their evening wear collections. For their SS20 lines, they made use of tulle to create ruffled and pleated details on the gowns.

Is this Veejay Floresca dress dark pink or red? Hmmm.

Trains that go on for days

The dress is so big, the train couldn’t fit in the frame.

You don’t need to have a wedding to wear a lengthy train. The signature piece from Joanna Ngo See’s “Eunoia” collection was a beige strapless gown with a ruffled train. Meanwhile, for Yong Davalos’ finale presentation, a pink gown with a sheer train made its way down the runway.

We want to exit the room with this train behind us.

Roped up

If you look closely, you’ll see the woven details done by Iris Driz.

Iris Driz’ collection gave us a crochet vibe because of the intricate weaving done with strips of fabric. Because of this technique, the pieces looked like they were made out of rope. Another designer who made use of rope details was Zia Ferrer, who sent out a dress with a chandelier-inspired deconstructed skirt.

Cheetah Rivera’s definition of cozy dressing

The first piece from Cheetah Rivera collection was a sweater dress with the word “TRY.” printed on the center. We also saw a top with the word “ADVOCACY” during the Avel Bacudio x Alden Richards presentation. Will these be the new “Feminist” shirts?

This is us during our days off.

Chin-high collars

Renan Pacson, who’s known for his edgy pieces, created a mini-dress with a chin-high collar and cutouts on the sides. We also saw a bridal bodysuit from Aurea Vinluan’s “Sinta” with a high collar that covered the model’s mouth, as well as a floral embroidered bodice and a flowy train.

Can I get married in this?
