Ricky Gervais addresses his transphobia controversy in Golden Globes monologue

Remember when Kevin Hart’s homophobic tweets resurfaced and he was removed as Oscars host last year? Well, after Ricky Gervais made some pretty transphobic tweets and passed them off as jokes before the 77th Golden Globes Awards, he’s still the host.

People questioned the decision to keep Gervais on board, even calling to replace him days before the awards show. This is why the comedian decided to briefly address the controversy in his Golden Globes monologue.

Gervais started by saying this is going to be the last time he’s hosting an awards show, so he’s taking the opportunity to make the jokes he want. “Let’s have a laugh at your expense. Remember: They’re just jokes. We’re all going to die, there’s no sequel,” he said.

This is a jab at the people who criticized the comedian for tweeting, “We need to protect the rights of women. Not erode them because some men have found a new cunning way to dominate and demonise an entire sex.” Gervais later defended himself, saying that he was simply responding to a satirical Jarvis Dupont account in the wake of JK Rowling’s transphobia controversy. He also said, “[If] I’ve said anything transphobic you should report me. Twitter has rules in place to guard against that sort of vile bigotry. My account will be closed down and you’ll be proved right and will have saved millions of lives. Why aren’t you doing this?”

Exactly. We need to protect the rights of women. Not erode them because some men have found a new cunning way to dominate and demonise an entire sex.

At least Hart was apologetic for his homophobic tweets. If he knows he’s acting like an A-hole, then he shouldn’t wait for other people to keep him in check.

If anything, at least Gervais wasn’t apologetic about reminding people that Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself.
